They are out there, and here are two of the most common in my lot:
- WEEDS Try to make sure you have a weed free patch. I never get a completely weed free area, but I do try to keep it clean, especially around the plants. Cucumber beetles thrive in weeds, and they are carriers of bacterial wilt. To keep diseases at bay, keep the weeds at bay. NOTE: I don't suggest using weed killer to kill weeds, as it will burn your plants and kill them. I have found it better to pull them by hand. Again, this was a hard lesson learned our first season.
- DROUGHT - This is another severe enemy. Try to make sure they have a good supply of water, taking care not to over water. They do not like being wet all the time.
